Drawing upon individual, organisational and community learning as the foundation for achievement in challenging times

Our roots as a Consultancy
Enviro-sys Pty Ltd was established in April 1990 as a partnership between People in Marketing Pty Ltd and Fisher Stewart Pty Ltd. This partnership coupled the learning facilitating and application entrepreneurship of Lewis Hughes as the principal of People in Marketing and the environment engineering capabilities of Fisher Stewart. In general terms, the purpose was to generate advantage in circumstances where others may only see disadvantage. For example, establishment of a demonstration sapling site as a precursor to acting upon applying moderately saline irrigation drainage water to agro-forestry at a scale which strengthened community whilst repairing environmental damage. Consequent upon this exposure, this led to co-operatively devising land use and engineering strategies whereby an underutilised rural property could be a place in which drug and alcohol addicted men acquired new capabilities through innovative working of the farm more so than it being just a place of residency. Another example being awakening of personal capabilities integrated with upgrading of water , wastewater and wind generated electric power infrastructure - in support of an otherwise unsustainable island community. Also, assembling a multi-disciplined team to undertake community and infrastructure-strengthening projects in developing countries was anotherexample, leading to sharpening of the Enviro-sys focus as now offered.

In 1997, Enviro-sys passed totally to Lewis and Elizabeth Hughes. This was consequent upon realignment of interests with Fisher Stewart moving toward integration with a global engineering organisation and Lewis’s broadening view of environmental influences upon organisation and community development. The outcome of this is that Enviro-sys now contributes with an expanded view of the environment. That is beyond (whilst including) natural components such as water, air, climate and the birds and the bees 'The environment’ has constructed components such as economic and competitive circumstances, organisation and community culture, and political influences. For example, the Enviro-sys approach (conceptually developed, but not yet utilised) to increasing the propensity for a developing country community to draw upon wastewater infrastructure – notwithstanding now having to pay a utility fee in turning away from the practice of disposing of untreated waste to the environment.

There is much to be gained by an organisation and/or community expanding their view of the environment. Accordingly, we would welcome the opportunity to discuss this as might apply in your circumstances – be it for profit or not-for-profit.

Dr Lewis Hughes - Lewis is a Life Member and past National President of the Australian Institute of Training and Development, Member of the Australian Water Association, Member of the United Nations Association of Australia, Associate Member of Volunteering Australia, Member of the Australian Association for Research in Education, Member of VETNET (A European Educational Research Association collegiate network of vocational education and training researchers) and has a Deakin University appointment as Honorary Fellow.
